Installing the FJC Bumper Wing deletes is a fairly easy job. I know some people have done it in less than an hour, but closer to 2 is probably more likely.
This is done by removing the old wings, drilling holes in the bumper, and bolting the new plates on. This is a completely reversable process if you ever decide you want to go back to OEM. The holes will not be visible when you put the old wings back on.
Also note that the fit is a bit inexact. Most people don’t notice after they are installed or care. If you do care and want a more perfect fit, some people have used plastic or rubber piping that they fit around the edge of the plate which fills the space nicely.
Tools you will need:
- Flathead screwdriver
- Electric drill
- 3/8″ wrenches
Procedure
- Remove old bumper wings
- This can be done with the bumper on or off. It’s easier with the bumper off, but harder to get the bumper off and probably not worth the effort.
- If done with the bumper on it’s easier if you have skinny arms. If you don’t it can still be done, it’s just tight.
- Remove the clips as shown in the photo below of the inside of the bumper. The clips are white. It’s hard to see from the photo, but they clip in to slots on the tabs of the bumper wings. They are removed by pressing them flat with a flathead screwdriver on the skinny side and pushing toward the fat side.
- Once removed, the old wing will come right off.
- Install wing replacements
- If you are concerned about scratching the plastic, put some painter’s tape around the edges of the plate.
- Hold the plate up to the indentation where the old wing was. Center and mark where to drill the holes using the holes on the plate as the template.
- Drill appropriately sized holes, 5/16″ should work.
- Remove painters tape if you used it.
- Put plate in place, bolt through the holes, washers and nut on the inside (regular washer, split washer, then nut and tighten finger tight.
- Slide plate into final position and tighten, NOT TOO TIGHT. tightening too tight will deform the plate. Once the nuts are good and snug, the split washers should keep them from loosening up and falling off.
